Est. 1961
Formed in 1961 or so by interested citizens, the Council was incorporated in 1978, with the assistance of the City through its Department of Community Development. The Council Board is elected by residents from three election districts, and the purpose of the corporation is to provide a forum for community issues and to promote the health and welfare of the people of McKnight.
In 1982 the Council acted to represent local residents against outside interests in various ways, such as by protesting the closing of the Tapley School and the failure to construct the Model Neighborhood Elementary School as directed by the Supreme Judicial Court, by working to prevent demolition of historic houses, and by opposing State-sponsored housing segregation. It also acted to provide for community autonomy and self-reliance by forming the McKnight Homeowners Association, Inc. and supporting other community efforts.
Current Council Board members, however, have taken a different view, and have stayed very close to the contracted role of providing “Citizen participation” to the Community Development Department.
